Delio – Winners of Technology Business of the Year 2022.
Why did you enter the Cardiff Business Awards?
Delio is proud to call Cardiff our home. Although we now have a team operating from multiple locations around the world, being recognised as one of the leading organisations in the city where we formed the business remains very important to us.
What did winning mean for you or your business?
We were delighted to be named as Technology Business of the Year. Cardiff, and South Wales more generally, is widely acknowledged as one of the most vibrant regions for technology firms in the UK. We know that there are many exciting start-ups, scale-ups and established tech businesses based here, so to come out on top of a highly competitive category was a great testament to our team’s achievements.
What did you think of the awards ceremony?
It was a great evening! Our team has been lucky enough to attend several awards events over the years, but getting dressed up to celebrate never gets old. It’s also a great way to reward our team members for their hard work.
What’s been a challenge for you or your business during the last year and how did you overcome it?
The economic climate is obviously pretty tough at the moment. As our clients work internationally, it’s safe to say that the rest of the world is not immune to the challenges we’re seeing closer to home. Having said that, financial institutions still see the absolute necessity to invest in digital tools that will enable them to work more efficiently and serve their clients more effectively. As a result, there’s still a huge demand for Delio’s products.
What’s been a highlight for you or your business over the last year and why?
Last March, we announced our growth funding from Octopus Ventures. This backing injected more than £6m into Delio and was key to enabling us to accelerate our growth internationally. It was also hugely satisfying to be backed by an organisation with such a good track record in the space who were able to see our future potential as a business.
What are your goals for 2023?
Quite simply, international expansion! We’re in a great position in that we already have clients across Europe, the US, Asia and the Middle East, but there’s a huge market opportunity for us to take advantage of, particularly in North America. To do that, we need to keep improving our technology and ensuring that we’re solving the problems that our clients face as effectively as possible.
What’s the best thing about running a business in Cardiff?
It probably sounds a bit cliche, but the people. We’re incredibly proud of our team and we’re delighted that we’re able to create highly skilled jobs here in Cardiff. Gareth, our chief executive, is passionate about offering young people in Wales the type of career opportunity that wasn’t available to him after graduating. To achieve this, we’re committed to bringing young, ambitious people into the business and offering them exposure to an industry that they typically would have had to move to London for in the past.
